Dental Implants

Tooth loss is an issue with many significant consequences. One of the most noticeable effects of tooth loss is the impact that it has on your smile. Tooth loss affects your abilities to bite and chew, and it also affects your speech. Below the gums, your jawbone begins to lose mass as a result of tooth loss, which can then alter your bite and cause several other serious complications. Nicholas W. Feldman, DDS, MBA can restore the functions of your missing teeth, and restore your quality of life, with dental implants.

What are Dental Implants?

Traditionally, missing teeth have been treated using bridges or dentures. While these treatments can restore many of the functions of your missing teeth and the quality of your smile, they do have their disadvantages. Dental implants are a modern alternative to these treatments. This treatment uses small titanium rods to provide support for replacement teeth. The rods are surgically placed into your jawbone. After surgery, your bone gradually fuses to the posts in a process called osseointegration. This process turns the posts into stable roots that hold your new teeth firmly in place.

Types of Dental Implants

Dental implants are incredibly versatile and can meet many different needs. There are several different types of implants, including:
•  Single tooth. A single tooth implant replaces an individual tooth. One post supports a single crown.
•  Multiple teeth or an implant supported bridge. A multiple teeth implant, also called an implant supported bridge, replaces two or more consecutive missing teeth.
•  Full arch restorations or implant supported dentures. A full arch restoration replaces an entire arch of missing teeth. Typically, your replacement teeth are supported by 6 to 8 posts. If you are missing too much bone mass in your jawbone, however, you may be a candidate for the All-on-4® Treatment Concept which provides you with a full arch restoration without the need for a bone graft.

Benefits of Dental Implants

Dental implants provide many benefits:
•  The ceramic crowns used to replace the visible surfaces of your missing teeth look exactly like your real teeth.
•  The teeth feel and function completely normally. You can bite and chew normally, and enjoy all of your favorite foods. You also do not need to worry about relearning how to speak.
•  Your teeth are held securely in place. Unlike dentures, they will not slip around or fall out. The teeth are secured into place with small screws and do not need to be removed.
•  You can brush and floss your new teeth just like your real teeth.
•  The posts restore stimulation to your jawbone, which aids in stopping and preventing bone loss in your jaw.

Dental Implant Drawbacks

While dental implants have many benefits, there are a few drawbacks as well:
•  Getting dental implants requires surgery.
•  Healing can take anywhere from several weeks to several months to complete.
•  If you do not have enough bone mass in your jaw, you may need a bone graft first.
•  Implants can be more expensive than traditional treatments.
