Implant Supported Dentures
Anchorage, AK

Losing your teeth is more than just embarrassing. Tooth loss can affect every aspect of your life. The more teeth you lose, the greater the effects. Not only does losing an entire arch of teeth impact the quality of your smile, but it also affects your abilities to eat and speak properly. Unable to bite and chew properly, it becomes more difficult to enjoy your favorite foods. This issue can also impact your digestion and overall nutrition. In addition to these obvious effects, tooth loss can also impact the health of your jawbone, leading to bone loss and changes in the shape of your jaw and face. At Nicholas W. Feldman, DDS, MBA, we can replace an entire arch of teeth, restoring your oral health, the functions of your mouth, and the aesthetics of your smile, with implant supported dentures.

Traditional Tooth Replacement

Traditionally, the only solution for replacing an entire arch of missing teeth was a denture. Dentures consist of a removable base that holds your replacement teeth. The dentures used today have an acrylic, gum colored base and acrylic resin teeth. They are designed to appear much more realistic than older dentures, including those dentures used just a few decades ago. While modern developments have improved their appearance, they still have several disadvantages, including slipping, falling out, denture sores, and the need for periodic replacement.

Implant Supported Dentures

Implant supported dentures are a modern solution for the replacement of a full arch of replacement teeth. This treatment involves the use of dental implants or small titanium posts that are surgically placed in your jawbone. As you heal from surgery, your bone gradually fuses to the posts, stabilizing them within your jaw. They essentially become replacement roots that then provide support for your new replacement teeth.

The Different Types of Implant Supported Dentures

There are several different types of implant supported dentures. These include:
•  Fixed implant supported dentures. Fixed implant supported dentures are the most common type of full arch replacement. This treatment uses 6 to 8 posts to support your new teeth.
•  Bar retained implant supported dentures. Bar-retained implant supported dentures are sometimes used if you lack the necessary bone mass to support a regular fixed implant-supported denture. This type of implant typically uses 4 to 6 implants. After the posts are placed, a titanium bar is placed that connects to all of them. Your replacement teeth, then clip into place on the bar rather than screw into place.
•  All-on-4®. The All-on-4® Treatment Concept is commonly used if you do not have sufficient bone mass in your jaw. This treatment, as the name suggests, uses only four posts, which are strategically placed in your jawbone. The posts take advantage of your existing bone, preventing the need for a bone graft. After the posts are placed, the replacement teeth are screwed into place.

What are the Benefits of Implant Supported Dentures?

Implant supported dentures provide several benefits, including:
•  Your replacement teeth are made from ceramic. They look just like natural teeth and function just like real teeth as well.
•  Your new teeth feel completely natural. They are also much more comfortable. You do not have to worry about the teeth slipping out of place or putting pressure on your gums. Instead of relying on your gums for support, your teeth are supported by the titanium posts.
•  Your teeth are held securely in place.
•  You can brush and floss your new teeth just like your real teeth.
•  The posts provide stimulation for your jawbone, just like the roots of your real teeth. Implants are the only option to provide these benefits, which helps to stop and prevent bone loss in your jaw.

When you have lost an entire arch of teeth, an implant-supported denture can restore the appearance of your smile, the functions of your mouth, and your quality of life. For more information, and to schedule your consultation, call Nicholas W. Feldman, DDS, MBA today at (907) 802-4519.
