Aesthetic Gum Lift

A smile after gum lift at Nicholas W. Feldman, DDS, MBA People get very nervous when we tell them they need gum surgery for a cosmetic or medical procedure. However, these surgeries are relatively quick and straightforward. Using the latest technology available Nicholas W. Feldman, DDS, MBA can improve the way your smile looks in just hours.

What is an Aesthetic Gum Lift?

We use a special laser to remove unwanted gum tissue gently. This procedure will make more of your teeth show and it will improve the look of your smile to make it more attractive.

In most cases, this is a cosmetic procedure meant to give our patients more confidence when smiling or speaking in social situations.

Who Needs an Aesthetic Gum Lift?

Patients with "gummy smiles" are the perfect candidates for aesthetic gum lift surgery. A gummy smile is where there is excessive gum tissue surrounding your teeth, and only a small portion of the crown is visible. Many patients with this issue are self-conscious about their smiles, and we want to help them feel at ease. We may do the gum lift in conjunction with other cosmetic procedures or on its own depending on the patient's situation.

What Causes Excess Gum Tissue?

In general, the excess gum tissue is genetic, or it can be the result of other health conditions. Some other reasons for those gummy smiles are:
•  Teeth that do not erupt, usually can appear short, even though their length is normal
•  Having hyperactive upper lip muscles that cause it to lift higher exposing more gum tissue
•  Developmental issues in the jawbone

Is a Gummy Smile Dangerous?

Most of the time patients who have gummy smiles only suffer from lack of confidence in the way their teeth look. In other instances, more serious problems can result from additional gum tissue. For example, if the excess gum tissue happened because of bone development problems, a patient can have issues with his or her bite, which could lead to other oral health concerns in the longer term.

Additional Treatments

We will do a thorough examination of your teeth and gums before proceeding with an aesthetic gum lift procedure. You will most likely need to get x-rays to determine the condition of the gums, teeth, and jawbone. If you want to correct the way your gums look for aesthetic reasons we can do it with a gum lift, but in other cases, you may need additional treatments such as:
•  Braces
•  Sculpting of the gum tissue
•  Lip surgery
•  Maxillofacial surgery

The good news is that there is no need for stitches with aesthetic gum lift surgery and the recovery is relatively fast when compared with other cosmetic procedures. You can usually eat and drink within 24–hours following the operation, and your gums will be completely healed after about a week. This will vary from patient to patient because everyone is different. You can use over-the-counter pain medications to control discomfort if necessary. If you need other surgeries to treat your condition, additional recovery time will be required.
