Veneers

Veneers are a permanent cosmetic solution to teeth imperfections. Many patients who are concerned with the way their smile looks, come to Nicholas W. Feldman, DDS, MBA requesting more information about veneers and other options we offer.

What Are Veneers?

A veneer is a super thin porcelain shell made of composite resin that is bonded to the tooth to hide imperfections. Adding veneers to your teeth is relatively simple and usually requires no anesthesia.

Why Do I Need Veneers?

Veneers are usually chosen by patients who want to improve the look of their smiles more permanently. They are used to hide things like teeth discoloration, chipped or cracked teeth, gaps between teeth, or misshaped teeth. If you have suffered trauma to a tooth, veneers can be a good option to fix that problem.

In general, we consider veneers as a cosmetic, optional treatment to make patients more confident in their smile for aesthetic purposes. With proper oral hygiene habits and regular checkups, your veneers should last you for many years.

Getting Veneers

The entire process of getting veneers requires several visits to our office.

The initial visit is for your consultation when you decide that veneers are a good option for you. You will be an active participant in this stage and let us know what your goals are and how you want your smile to look. You can let us know exactly what you want to correct, so we understand how to build your veneers. More than one appointment may be necessary to get all the details we need. If you are getting ceramic veneers, we will need to take a mold so that the off-site lab can make them. Composite resin veneers are usually installed in one appointment.

During the next visit, we will get your teeth ready for the new veneers. To do this, we scrape and sand the tooth or teeth that will get the veneers. A local anesthetic is used in most cases, but you can let us know if you have a fear of the procedure, so we can make sure you are comfortable. After the teeth are buffed, our dentist will add the resin material and bond the veneers to the tooth using a special blue laser to harden the resin. With ceramic veneers, we will place them on each tooth to check for shape and color, which can still be adjusted if you are not satisfied with the match. Once the veneer is bonded to your tooth, the color cannot be changed, so it’s critical that you let us know if you are not happy with the look of the veneer.

Following the procedure, you will need to care for your veneers with good oral hygiene at home. This includes brushing twice a day and flossing at least once each day. Veneers are relatively inexpensive when compared with other cosmetic treatments, so it’s important to care for your veneers and avoid chewing on hard foods to prevent them from cracking or getting chipped. With proper care, your veneers should last you for many years and give you a beautiful smile.
