Dentistry for Kids
You brush and floss your teeth every day. You have your teeth professionally cleaned and examined. Did you know that these same habits are important for little mouths too? Your child should be brushing and flossing their teeth every day and having their teeth professionally taken care of as well. The oral care needs of your child are a bit different than your own needs. At Nicholas W. Feldman, DDS, MBA, we can provide your child with the specialized care they need with dentistry for kids.
When Should My Child First Come In?
Many parents are uncertain of when exactly their child should have their very first appointment. The answer is sooner than most think. Your child should be seen for their very first dental appointment six months following the eruption of their first baby tooth, or by their first birthday, whichever one occurs first.
Routine Cleanings and Exams
Regular cleanings and exams are an integral part of your oral health and are just as important for your child. With cleanings, we can help your child eliminate all buildup from the surfaces of their teeth. We can clean the areas of their mouth that they might not be able to clean effectively on their own and can remove the most stubborn buildup. This helps your child to prevent the formation of cavities and other oral health issues. Exams enable us to spot the development of a wide array of oral health issues in their earliest stages, often before symptoms begin to appear. By finding issues early, we can provide less invasive treatments to restore the oral health of your child.
While cavities can affect anyone, children tend to be more prone. There are a few different treatments that we can provide to help your child prevent tooth decay and cavities from forming. One of these treatments is sealants. Sealants are applied to the chewing surfaces of your molars. Made of plastic, they are designed to seal the deep crevices of your molars, preventing bacteria and food particles from getting trapped in areas that can be incredibly difficult to clean.
Another preventative treatment we provide is fluoride. Fluoride treatments consist of a fluoride gel that is applied to the surfaces of the teeth following a dental cleaning. The fluoride absorbs into the tooth enamel, where it goes to work strengthening the teeth and helping them to fight off acid attacks from plaque and bacteria. Fluoride can even help to reverse the early stages of tooth decay before a cavity has had the chance to form.
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that children have an orthodontic evaluation by the age of 7. At this age, the adult teeth are developing below the gumline, and some may be beginning to erupt through the gums. Many different orthodontic issues can be diagnosed or predicted at this point. With an orthodontic evaluation, we can determine any issues your child might face and develop a treatment plan that will help them to develop a beautiful, healthy smile. In some cases, we can reduce the severity of future orthodontic treatments, or even eliminate the need for future treatments.
With specialized care aimed at younger patients, we can help your child to develop good oral hygiene practices and set them up for a lifetime of good oral health. Call Nicholas W. Feldman, DDS, MBA at (907) 802-4519 to schedule an appointment for your child today.
