Dentures and Partials
Anchorage, AK

There are several concerns when a patient has missing teeth. Having gaps in your mouth can not only affect you aesthetically, but you could be at risk for other more serious dental problems in the future. It is vital that we address any missing teeth to prevent further damage. At Nicholas W. Feldman, DDS, MBA we have several solutions for tooth replacement including dentures and partials.

Why Tooth Loss Happens

People lose teeth for many reasons including poor oral hygiene habits and lack of professional dental care for years. Many are afraid of the dentist or cannot pay for their regular checkups, and their insurance doesn't cover dental care. Periodontal disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in the U.S., and the statistics are alarming. Recent data indicates that up to 70–percent of adults suffer from gum disease, the initial stage of periodontal disease.

Bacteria in the mouth causes the production of plaque. The sticky film that makes the teeth look yellowish. If you don't get regular cleanings from our hygienists, the plaque accumulations eventually start to inflame the gums, and they begin to pull away from the teeth, creating pockets in which more plaque grows. Once the gums start to pull away, teeth become loose and can eventually fall out.

Periodontal disease can be treated and sometimes reversed when addressed early, which can save your teeth.

Dentures and Partials for Teeth Replacement

Dentures are one of the most common treatments for people who have missing teeth. Depending on how many pieces are missing, you can have a full denture or a partial.

A denture is a removable tooth replacement device, usually made from acrylic, with crowns that are fixed on top of it. They allow you to eat and speak normally when wearing them. Dentures can replace all or some of your teeth, but to use a partial, you need to have some natural teeth left so they can hold the partial in place.

If you have several missing teeth in your upper or lower jaw, we may need to extract any remaining teeth to place a denture. After the teeth are removed, we allow you to recover from the procedure, and then you come back to get impressions made so we can make your new dentures. We offer our patients immediate dentures, which can be made in advance, so they are prepared to be placed right after the teeth are extracted.

Pros and Cons of Dentures and Partials

The most significant advantage of using dentures is for aesthetic purposes and to allow you to eat and speak. You will be able to enjoy your everyday activities, and dentures can, in some cases, improve the way your smile looks.

The most significant disadvantages of dentures and partials are bone loss. When your teeth are missing, there is an empty space where the root used to be. This can create a domino effect that can cause more tooth loss. It can also cause adjacent teeth to shift and eventually fall out. Your speech and the taste of food can also be affected by dentures and partials. Moreover, with bone loss comes changing of the jawbone which may require adjustment of the dentures.
